Closer To Truth: Human Uniqueness

There is an ongoing PBS TV series called “Closer To Truth”. It is hosted by neuroscientist Robert Lawrence Kuhn. He’s featured in one-on-one interviews and panel discussions with the cream of the cream of today’s cosmologists, physicists, philosophers, theologians, psychologists, etc. on all of the Big Questions surrounding a trilogy of broad topics – Cosmos; Consciousness; Meaning. Here are a few of my comments on one of the general topics covered, a subject dealing with the alleged uniqueness of the human species.

Violent Television/Internet Commercials: Behavioral Effects on the Minds/Emotions of American Youth

They say that you are what you eat, which is ultimately true about diet producing human health. Another truism passed down through the ages is that you are what you read, watch, and hear. Pragmatic social psychologists who work for advertising companies understand this human truth all too well, and play a large part in the designing and production of television and Internet product commercials, for the express purpose of persuading television and Internet watchers to buy food, clothing, and inventions produced by corporations and companies, and to buy into government-produced social propaganda. Most of these products and government propaganda are advertised through emotion-based violence and sexual appeal produced through the computer graphic blend of animation and electronic television in the production of commercials. Violence and sex appeal to the baser components of the human psyche, and preadolescent and adolescent children watch these 2-to-3 minute commercials repeatedly shown during television programs, documentaries, and movies.
